New Catalogue

New CatalogueOur new illustrated catalogue of Americana describes 182 items relating to the Americas, North and South, in English, Spanish and other languages.  Among the highlights are such classics as Hakluyt's Principal Navigations (1589), Willes's History of Travayle (1577), Carver's Travels through North America (1778) and Sayer & Bennett's American Military Pocket Atlas (1776), and several rare works printed in Spanish America, including Carochi's Arte de la lengua mexicana (Mexico, 1645), Rocha's Tratado unico del origen de los indios occidentales (Lima, 1681) and Viana's Diario of the Malaspina expedition (Montevideo, 1849).  Also offered are an autograph letter by Charles Darwin concerning the skull of a niata ox found in South America, Giovio's Elogia (1575), which includes the earliest firmly dated portrait of Columbus, and John Dee's General and Rare Memorials, one of only 100 copies printed in 1577, which refers to Frobisher's voyages and Queen Elizabeth's supposed claims to the North American continent. In the less expensive price-range numerous other books, principally nineteenth-century, on American travel and history, some standard, some unusual, can also be found in this catalogue.  For further information, please contact Anthony Payne.
