First edition, #54 of 300 copies signed by Model, with a gelatin silver print ‘Sailor and Girl’ (c. 1940), also signed.

A landmark monograph, Model’s first, collecting images from the ’40s to the ’70s, from the French Riviera to Sammy’s Bar in the Bowery. Born in Austria, Model established herself as a photographer in New York during the war, publishing regularly in Harper’s Bazaar. Her importance is not to be underestimated, not least because of her years as a teacher at the New School where her pupils included Arbus, Gossage, Fink and Weber. Abbott was a colleague.
