The doctoral dissertation of Rudolf Laemmel, produced under the auspices of Burkhardt of Zurich, and the first attempt at founding probability theory on set theory and measure theory (the axiomatization of probability). The work discusses the rules of total and compound probability as axioms. The rule of compound probability is stated only in the case of independence, a concept he did not explicate. The work is mentioned by John Maynard Keynes in his Treatise on probability. Rudolf Laemmel (1879-1962) was an educational reformer and writer.

In the first, brief, letter, written from Rayleigh’s home at Witham in Essex and dated 19 June 1916, Rayleigh agrees to forward a paper to the Royal Society: ‘I will gladly communicate Mr White’s paper to R. S. The extension of what I did is interesting, and he points out a stupid mistake of mine w[hic]h might easily have led me into more trouble than it did’. ‘Mr White’ is perhaps the American mathematician Henry Seely White (1861–1943).

Rare first edition of this doctoral dissertation on the solution of Hilbert’s sixth problem, written under the supervision of David Hilbert. The problem posed tried to axiomatize those branches of science in which mathematics is prevalent. Broggi here aims to establish a system with which to prove the consistency, completeness and the mutual independence of the axioms, following the model of Hilbert’s geometry.
