First edition. A child’s guide to life on board a cruiser of the Red Fleet, in verse accompanied by illustrations. Beginning with the alphabet in semaphore, the essential first lesson for any sailor, we see the cruiser on its journey from loading at the dock, then setting off, followed by scenes of everyday life on board, with the sailors working on deck, checking equipment and missiles, and their living quarters.

The expansion of the Soviet Navy to become a world-recognized force was an important component of the 1930s industrialization drive throughout the Soviet Union. The present work was written in the year of the formation of the Pacific Fleet, while the Northern Fleet was founded the following year.
