Fourth edition of the first detailed study in veterinary anatomy and an extremely important work in the history of anatomy as a discipline. Influenced by Andreas Vesalius’s De fabrica corporis humani (Basel, 1543), the Anatomia del cavallo is copiously illustrated with large woodcuts, attributed variously (and with little evidence) to Caracci, Titian, and other skilled painters. Enormously influential both in anatomy and veterinary medicine, Ruini’s findings on the equine circulatory system pre-empted Harvey’s discovery of the human equivalent in 1628.

A later impression of these magnificent plates of nine Roman gardens by the influential engraver Giovanni Battista Falda (1643–1678). The plates offer perspectives and bird’s-eye-views of the gardens of the Vatican and Quirinal, and of the villas Medici, Farnese, Ludovisi, Montalto Peretti, Borghese, Celimontana, and Pamphili. Populated with labouring gardeners, well-dressed visitors, barking dogs, and ornate carriages, Falda’s etchings ‘are distinguished by deeply bitten line and shadow in the manner of Jacques Callot and Israël Silvestre, and by accuracy in topographical and genre details’ (Grove Art Online). The magnificent dedication plate, depicting the Garden of the Hesperides, is by Arnold van Westerhout (1651–1725).

First edition, rare especially as complete with both parts as here, of the first Roman Missal in Croatian, an important association copy from the library of a Prefect of Studies of the Propaganda Fide. The Missal is printed in Shtokavian (or Štokavian), the prestige dialect of the pluricentric Serbo-Croatian language and the basis of its Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian and Montenegrin standards. The Missal is adorned with many woodcuts and includes musical notation.
