A treatise by a German artillery officer on the electrical transmission of images, occasioned by newspaper reports of Jan Szczepanik’s invention. ‘On February 24, 1897, Jan Szczepanik and Ludwig Kleinberg of Austria applied for a patent for a method and apparatus for reproducing pictures and the like at a distance by means of electricity. (In Britain, this was the first television patent aplied for.)’ (Abramson p. 21, describing the apparatus). The progenitor of television was suitably gigantic: the folding plate illustrates a scanner nearly twice a man’s height. Only one copy in NUC; WU.

First edition of this poem in six cantos, with extensive notes, on the disastrous 1755 Lisbon earthquake, by the Oratorian priest and philosopher Almeida (1722-1804). One of the deadliest in history, the earthquake almost totally destroyed the Portuguese capital and accentuated political tensions within the kingdom. It was widely discussed by European Enlightenment philosophers, including Voltaire and Rousseau, and led to important debates around theodicy and philosophical optimism.

First edition of this play by one of the most popular writers in Russia during the first decade of the twentieth century: Andreev’s fame ‘was almost on a par with that of Chekhov and Gorky. The fact remains that his talent and topical themes, his literary techniques combining tradition and modernism, the boldness of his imagination, and a captivating sketchiness of thought in dealing with complex moral-psychological and philosophical problems, endeared him to a significant segment of the intelligentsia and made him consonant with the times. And though the readership and that epoch are gone forever, some of Andreev’s characteristics, particularly his obvious talent, ensure for him a permanent place in Russian literature’ (Terras).
