First edition of one of the author’s major works. (Our translation: ‘holds a special place as a critic of socialism. Up to that point, no other German had made such a considered scientific attempt to separate the true from the false in the ideas of socialism, as in his lectures on capitalism and socialism, published in 1870’).

Schäffle (1831–1903) was Professor of Economics at the University of Tübingen before obtaining a professorship at the University of Vienna (1868) and an appointment as Austrian Minister of Trade (1871). ‘His influence, both as an opponent of laissez-faire liberalism and a reconciler of German philosophy and the inductive method of economic investigation, was considerable’ (Who’s Who in Economics).
