8vo in 16s, pp. iv, 259, [1] contents; a little very slight spotting and a few damp stains, occasional pencil underlining and marginal annotations, ink stamp to the title, partially clipped with a paper repair, repaired tear to a later leaf, without loss; in the original publisher’s printed paper wrappers, a couple of ink stamps and ink and pencil notes to the lower cover; sometime stab sewn into later wrappers, now removed, spine partly defective.
First edition of Tugan-Baranoskiĭ’s work on socialism; it was translated into English as Modern Socialism in its Historical Development by M. I. Redmount and published in 1910. After dismissal from his position at the University of St. Petersburg in 1899 for ‘political unreliability’, Tugan-Baranoskiĭ was reinstated just a year before he published Sovremennyĭ sotsializm (The New Palgrave).
