First edition of Coppens’s text-book, written in response to Leo XIII’s injunction to ‘establish not only a well-adapted and solid method of instruction, but a method in perfect conformity with the Catholic faith, especially as regards Mental Philosophy, on which the right teaching of all the other sciences in a great measure depends – a Philosophy which shall prepare the way for Divine Revelation instead of aiming at its overthrow’ (p. 3).

Extremely rare first edition of these four verse letters by Claudio Todeschi (b. 1737) addressed to baroness Laura Astalli Piccolomini, his fellow member of the Accademia degli Arcadi. Known as 'Clori', Laura was a soprano and one of the last surviving members of the noble Roman family the Astallis; she married Pietro Testa Silveri Piccolomini, 8th Baron of Balsorano, in 1765. Founded in 1690, the Accademia degli Arcadi was the first Italian academy to admit women.

First Hungarian edition of John Stuart Mill’s great essay On Liberty, with a lengthy introduction by the Austro-Hungarian statesman Béni Kállay (1839–1903). First published in 1859, Mill’s vastly influential essay was dedicated to his wife Harriet who had provided the stimulus for the work. ‘Many of Mill’s ideas are now the commonplaces of democracy. His arguments for freedom of every kind of thought or speech have never been improved on. He was the first to recognize the tendency of a democratically elected majority to tyrannize over a minority, and his warning against it has a contemporary ring: “We can never be sure that the opinion we are endeavouring to stifle is a false opinion; and, if we are sure, stifling it would be an evil still”’ (PMM 345).
