A lovely copy of this rare Italian translation of a treatise by the French lawyer Jean Baptiste Hutteau (1765–1855) on the laws relating to the transport of goods, whether by road or by water, in the light of the new Napoleonic Code civil. The work describes the ways in which goods should be handed over to drivers, transport prices set, the documentation required, the registration of carriers, the obligations of goods owners, lessors, and carriers towards one another, and the requirement to complete journeys within the agreed time and with the appropriate care and attention; various case studies are given where these requirements are not met, including the transport of tobacco from Paris to Marseille and then Constantinople, where a lantern placed on the load at night set fire to the cargo. Finally, advice is given on the resolution of contracts that could not be completed due to force majeur. A useful index completes the work.

OCLC records just one copy outside Italy, at the library of the architectural school at the Università della Svizzera Italiana in Mendrisio.

Rare Russian language tract on ‘The Greatest Communist Society in the World (Doukhobor Society),’ which left Russia for Canada in 1898-9, aided by Leo Tolstoy. Opening with a brief history of the pacifist sect, Tugan-Baranovsky mentions their customs, recounting numerous ethnographical details such as how children would address their mother as ‘Nanny’ and their father as ‘Old Man’, their beliefs, and the reasons for their emigration, giving details of the arrival of the sect in its new home and the process of settlement. The text concludes with an examination of the compatibility of the doctrines of the sect, which described itself as a ‘Christian society of peaceful brotherhood’, with the tenets of Communism.

Russkaia fabrika v proshlom’ i nastoiashchem’ [The Russian factory in the past and present].

First edition thus, originally issued as the author’s doctoral dissertation in 1894, a historic-economic analysis of Russian factories up to the 19th century. Beginning with a long introductory chapter on the 18th century, the work analyses factory development before and after the emancipation of the serfs in 1861. It looks at the changing interdependent relationship between the Russian factory in all its incarnations and the work force, considering the status and wages of the workers. Examining the competition between factory and cottage industry production, it discusses the phenomenon of factories serving as training grounds for craftsmen who then undermined the factories by taking their skills into cottage industries. Factory legislation, the rate of industrial growth, and the place of the state and public opinion in industrial growth are also mentioned. A landmark text in the Marxist-narodnik debates, this was one of the earliest texts to comment on the rapidity of industrial development after 1861 and the great potential therein for further growth nationwide.
