First edition, comprising three speeches delivered by Solzhenitsyn to the American people in 1975.

The first speech, delivered on 30 June in Washington DC to the AFL-CIO (the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations), was Solzhenitsyn’s first major public address since his exile from Russia the previous year. It is followed by a speech delivered to the American Federation of Labor Trade Unions Congress in New York on 9 July. The third speech was given on 15 July on Solzhenitsyn’s reception in the US Senate, and contains the famous lines: ‘Very soon, too soon… your country will stand in need of not just exceptional men but of great men. Find them in your souls. Find them in your hearts. Find them - in the depths of your country!’
