First edition. As President of the University of Wisconsin Bascom advocated the ‘Wisconsin Iidea’ the Universities should work to improve the lives of people beyond the borders of its campus. ‘In a way unmatched by any leader of a major American university in his time, Bascom outlined a social gospel that called for an expanded role for state governments and universities as agencies of moral improvement’ (Hoeveler, John Bascom and the origins of the Wisconsin idea).

A prolific writer, as well as a professor and college president, John Bascom authored more than 30 books on a great variety of subjects: amongst his other works were An appeal to young men on the use of tobacco (1850), The science of mind (1881) and An historical interpretation of philosophy (1893).
