Rare first edition of the influential Polish poet, playwright and essayist’s first book, a collection of forty poems printed in an edition of 1205 copies under the title String of light.
Herbert had published a few poems in reviews from the late 1940s, but because of the political situation in Poland he wrote mainly ‘for the desk drawer’, and it was only with the beginning of the Thaw in politics and culture in 1956 that he was able to publish his first collection at the age of thirty-two. Two more volumes followed in 1957 and 1961 which brought him international recognition.
