First edition thus, inscribed by one of the subscribers, the novelist and biographer Gertrude Townshend Mayer (née Dalby) ‘W. M. Rossetti, Esq. In Memory of Leigh Hunt’. Mayer’s father John Watson Dalby had been a friend of Leigh Hunt, though it was Dante Gabriel rather than William Michael who had corresponded with Hunt in the 1840s.
The other works bound in here are: The True Story of Lord and Lady Byron … in Answer to Harriet Beecher Stowe; and Passages from the Note-books of the late Nathaniel Hawthorne (both published by John Camden Hotten in 1869). Hotten had published William Michael Rossetti’s edition of Whitman in 1868.
