A seemingly unrecorded Swedish hymnbook, in a delightful gilt and painted panel-stamped betrothal binding and with a long chain of female provenance in central Sweden.

The large central heart embossed on each board bears the inscription ‘Tag denna äfen trogen hand | Til ett Säkert Kiärleks Band’ (‘Take this true and faithful hand | To be love’s everlasting band’). The upper and lower hearts depict the Risen Christ with his banner and the Passion respectively, the latter with both the sun and the moon in the sky to symbolise the Darkness at Noon.

Provenance:
1. On the front pastedown an early owner recorded the birth of one ‘Brjtta L[ars?] Dotter’ on 2 December 1831, likely Brita Larsdotter (1831–1908) of Bjuråker near Malung, Dalarna.

2. Mathilda Wikström (1872–1959) of Baggärdet, Dalarna, with an inscription recording the gift of the book as a Christmas present ‘af hennes så tillgifna vän Siri [‘Bohm’ added in another hand] Dalarne [sic] 24/12 1903’ (‘from her very affectionate friend Siri Bohm [née Wikström, 1860–1942] Dalarna 24/12 1903’).

3. Margit Ramström (1889–1965) of Främsbacka, Dalarna, with an inscription recording the gift of the book ‘från hennes så tillgivna vän Margit Bonde född Wikström Dec. 1948’ (‘from her very affectionate friend Margit Bonde née Wikström [1890–1980] Dec. 1948’.
