First edition, a collection of late poems by the pre-eminent Soviet Yiddish poet and novelist Peretz Markish; the translations are by several hands.

The poems come under the headings ‘The invincible’, ‘In defiance of death’, ‘The last pale’, ‘Lyrics’ and ‘The offensive’, and there are renditions of portions of the longer poems ‘The Thistle’ (1935), and ‘Ripening’ (1939). Most of the works deal with national or Jewish themes, particularly those written in the aftermath of the German invasion of Poland – including the sequence ‘Autumn 1941’.
