Fifth edition of the Course of Psalms (1816), compiled by Jonathan Tyers Barrett (1784–1851) from the 1698 New Version of the Psalms, in a handsome contemporary binding of red morocco.
The Psalms are intended to accompany a separate book of Psalm Tunes, with the musical setting for each shown in the index at the end of this book. They are arranged in line with the Church calendar, running from the first Sunday in Advent and to the twenty-sixth Sunday after Trinity. At the end are a selection of Psalms for occasions such as the anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot and the ‘Restoration of the Royal Family’, in addition to two hymns for Christmas and Easter.
A note on the flyleaf refers to the 1830 Bampton Lecture, ‘An Inquiry into the Doctrines of the Anglo-Saxon church’, delivered by the clergyman and Church historian Henry Soames (1785–1860).
