Very rare Helsinki-printed edition of the Sufi poet Saadi Shirazi’s Pandnāma or Book of Counsel, with Latin translation and commentary, forming a dissertation delivered at the Imperial Alexander University in Finland in 1835.
Saadi’s thirteenth-century Pandnāma is one of the most influential works in the Persian tradition of ‘mirrors for princes’, presenting its moral teachings in rhyming couplets often memorised by later students. The present dissertation – delivered viva voce in Helsinki by Gabriel Geitlin (1804–1871), future vicar of Espoo in southern Finland and professor of biblical exegesis at Helsinki – is in two halves, the first consisting of a Latin introduction, commentary, and translation, with much philological detail, the second giving the original Persian text, proceeding right-to-left to end where the Latin portion concludes.
OCLC finds only two copies outside the Continent (Cornell, Princeton), to which Library Hub adds the British Library and the Royal Asiatic Society.
