First edition, a critical essay by Shaginian published in the same year as Orientalia (advertised here), the collection of poetry that brought her fame.
Zinaida Gippius (or Hippius, 1869–1945) was one of the most influential Russian symbolist poets. She was also a distinguished fiction writer, playwright, essayist, memoirist and critic, active in the religious and philosophical societies of St Petersburg, and famous for her fashionable literary soirées. The precocious Shaginian, who had been writing for newspapers since she was fifteen, was part of this circle, alongside Bely, Blok, Sologub and others, and Gippius had been a powerful influence on her first collection, Pervyia vstrechi (1909).
