First edition of Shaginyan’s account of a pilgrimage to Weimar, presented by the author ‘to the respected Vladimir Pavlovich Pirogov in dear memory’ (trans.).

Written in 1914 but delayed from publication by war and revolution, the volume closes with Goethe’s poem sequence ‘Zu meinen Handzeichnungen’, the German text alternating with Shaginyan’s translations. A friend of Rachmaninoff and a staunch Stalinist, Marietta Sergeevna Shaginyan (or Shaginian, 1888–1982) won the Lenin Prize in 1972 for the revised edition of her 1938 The Ulyanov Family, a fictional account of Lenin’s early life.
