Only edition of this attractively illustrated and very rare guide to life-saving in mines, by the Belgian mining engineers Stenuit and de Voghel. Divided into three parts, the book opens with explanations of the possible hazards, ranging from asphyxiation to explosions and underground fires, as well as accidents due to water and electricity. This is followed by guidance on using the various types of life-saving apparatus, and the correct way to distribute equipment; and then the use of first aid, including artificial respiration, and treatment for burns, cuts, poisoning, epilepsy, and more. Of particular note are the numerous illustrations, both diagrammatic and photographic, of different types of breathing apparatus, some of which are advertised in the splendid supplement at the end of the volume.

Only edition, as far as we can tell unrecorded, of this anonymously published poem in praise of the horn. Although ostensibly a chaste work extolling the virtues of the instrument, there is enough to suggest that the poet may have been thinking along less musical lines; the horn, we are repeatedly told, is only to be played in front, never behind, and the ‘giovine umano col corno in mano’ is associated not with any musical god but with Harpocrates, the god of secrets. There is, however, little to stop the determinedly innocent reader remaining so.

PLAGUE BLAMED ON WAR AND FAMINE LANDI, Bassiano.

De origine et causa pestis Patauinae, anni MDLV ...

First edition of this important work investigating the causes of the plague which struck Padua in 1555, by the eminent, and controversial, professor of medicine Bassiano Landi (d. 1562). In his De origine Landi argues against the then popular belief that the plague had been caused by putrid air (noting that, for one thing, this theory did not explain why mortality among the poor was higher than among the nobility), or that it arose from the water supply or from the land. Instead Landi finds the origins of the disease in the destruction caused by the war waged in the region by Francis I, which had prompted famine and forced people to eat corrupted food. Landi also identifies two groups particularly affected by the plague: those wearing infected garments, and the poor. The De origine ends with discussion of medicinal remedies against the disease, considering those suggested by ancient writers, and, more practically, recipes using common garden plants.
