Two unrecorded Latin primers provincially printed in Monterrey, with extracts from Cicero’s Epistolae and Aesop’s fables.
The first work – originally published in Mexico City in 1720 and reprinted in a dozen or so editions thereafter, all very rare – consists of a brief summary of the Latin parts of speech followed by extracts drawn from the letters of Cicero and the fables of Aesop. The second, adapted from a mnemonic poem by the great Spanish humanist Nebrija, gives rules for the gender of nouns and the formation of the perfect tense and supine. Both were intended for young pupils.
Francisco Molina, who issued both works, was printer to the Mexican government from the 1830s under both the First Republic and the Centralist Republic, publishing a number of official documents and declarations in Monterrey, many of which survive only in single copies. In the year before the publication of both our works Monterrey had briefly formed part of the breakaway República del Río Grande.
Our copy of the Contrucciones was evidently owned by an early female student, one Gertrudis Treviño, perhaps of the prominent Nuevoleonese family of that name.
