Uncensored
LAWRENCE, D[avid] H[erbert].
Pansies. London, P. R. Stephensen, 1929.
8vo, pp. [14], 123, [1]; with a frontispiece; minimal foxing to text; in the original card covers, printed in red and black, glassine wrappers (spine chipped and browned), slipcase (rubbed, spine partly defective, stained at head).
No. 91 of 500 signed copies of this privately printed edition, issued as a protest against the censorship of the first edition published by Secker.
Fourteen poems had been omitted from the first publication of Pansies five months earlier, on the instruction of the Home Office, on the grounds of obscenity, and the manuscript was seized by Scotland Yard. Five hundred people formed a private society to print the unexpurgated text, with Lawrence’s support, and he wrote a new introduction deploring censorship.
Fabes, pp. 24–5; Roberts A47c.
