First and only edition, very rare, a presentation copy to the officer and MP Frederick Walpole.
The Rev. Henry James Lee-Warner (1802–1885), of Little Walsingham, was High Sheriff of Norfolk in 1864. His systematic attack on Liberal-Whig politics covers everything from taxation (too high), Gladstone’s ‘clap-trap finances’, public works (wasteful), taxation (again), the navy (losing out to America), the Church (assailed on all sides), a secret ballot (the producer of despotism), education, ‘colonial taxation’, and ‘a few more words on taxation’.
The recipient of this copy, Frederick Walpole (1822–1876), a younger son of Horatio Walpole, Lord Walpole of Wolterton, was a commander in the navy and the militia, and evidently a receptive audience, for he became a Conservative MP in 1868. The same cannot be said for Lee-Warner’s own son Henry, later elected as a Liberal.
