The Monk, Illustrated
LEWIS, M[atthew] G[regory].
The Monk: a Romance … with seven Engravings. London, Benjamin Franklin, 1837.
16mo, pp. [4], 605, [1], with a folding frontispiece engraving (neatly repaired on verso), and six other folding engraved plates; plates creased, a little dusty, else very good; in the original green textured cloth, spine lettered gilt.
Extremely rare illustrated edition of this celebrated Gothic novel, the most famous and infamous in the genre, vigorously suppressed after the third edition of 1797 but nevertheless oft reprinted. This popular pocket edition, which retailed at 3/6, is enlivened by some appropriately lurid illustrations, several of which signed ‘TA’. The imprint ‘Benjamin Franklin’, likely pseudonymous, appears on some rare radical periodicals in the 1830s – The Weekly Herald and Le Bonnet Rouge – and very little else.
Not in Library Hub; OCLC lists a single copy, at the Anna Amalia Bibliothek.
