Two works in one vol., 12mo, Smith: pp. [vi], 200, [2], with two folding letterpress tables, Brerewood: pp. [2 (blank)], [xxii], 98, ‘101–110’ (i.e. 99–108); woodcut ornament to each title, typographic headpieces; a little browned, a few minor spots and dampstains, else good copies; bound in contemporary English calf, spine ruled in blind, edges sprinkled red; a little rubbed; contemporary ownership inscription ‘Sum ex libris Danielis Blithe Aulæ Clarensis 57’ to rear flyleaf (see below), notes on logic in a contemporary hand to rear free endpaper, scattered annotations and pen trials.

A sammelband of two seventeenth-century student texts on logic, issued together and rather unusually combining Oxford and London imprints, this copy with contemporary Cambridge provenance.

First published in 1613 and 1614 respectively, Smith’s and Brerewood’s textbooks were highly popular as introductions to the Aristotelian–scholastic logic so prominent in the seventeenth-century university curriculum. They were frequently issued together – an arrangement not uncommon at the time for pairs of complementary works – though our volume is unusual in bringing together two separate pairs of printers and publishers in two different cities, suggesting some form of Oxford–London co-publication. ESTC records another example of the present combination, held by Middle Temple.

Provenance:
Daniel Blythe (c. 1637–c. 1735), admitted a sizar at Clare Hall (now College), Cambridge, in 1655, later a Fellow thereof, curate of Little Eversden in Cambridgeshire, and perhaps prebendary of Salisbury.
