Titchmarsh’s Tennyson
TENNYSON, Alfred, Lord.
The Works of Alfred, Lord Tennyson, Poet Laureate. London, Macmillan & Co., 1894.
8vo, pp. viii, 898, with stipple-engraved frontispiece portrait with tissue guard; guard slightly browned, nonetheless an excellent copy; bound in near-contemporary black morocco, front board tooled in gilt and blind, spine gilt in compartments and lettered directly in gilt, edges gilt, marbled endpapers; presentation inscription dated 1909 to front free endpaper verso, engraved pictorial bookplate of Alan Titchmarsh to front pastedown.
An exceptionally attractive turn-of-the-century binding, with floral and foliate tooling in gilt and blind, later in the library of Alan Titchmarsh.
The binding is strikingly modern in its simplicity and in its use of blind tooling to produce a textured background accentuating a gilt centrepiece.
Provenance:
From the library of the noted horticulturalist Alan Titchmarsh, with a pictorial bookplate featuring books strewn around a chair in a delightfully detailed garden.
